Peter H. Sloan, Jr., AIA
Vice President, Director of Design, Interiors
As a Vice President at HOK in Kansas City, Peter Sloan, AIA, focuses his passion for architecture on shaping communities in positive ways. Peter’s enthusiasm for design stems from his core belief that the built environment is about people rather than bricks and mortar. His approach to design is rooted in advocating for architecture as a means to support the human desire to gather and share. Philosophically and in practice, Peter strives to create spaces that inspire, inform, and sustain each of us socially, spiritually, and experientially.
Peter is a graduate of Syracuse University’s architecture program and a registered architect and nationally certified interior designer. For more than 25 years, he has worked on a wide variety of award-winning projects varying in scale, scope, and project type. He is a skilled collaborator and facilitator, well-versed in strategically aligning his designs to leverage and optimize his clients’ organizational goals and business objectives. Peter challenges embedded assumptions to draw out the most critical drivers for each project he works on. His energetic and inclusive style allows him to tap into the creative talent of people across disciplines and industries to find fresh ideas and innovative solutions.
Peter is also an active leader within the local architectural community and currently sits on the AIAKC Board of Directors as a past president. During Peter’s 6-year tenure on the AIAKC Board of Directors, he has been engaged in numerous committees, including the education outreach committee, which promotes the relevance of architecture, design, and creative thinking to middle and high school students in the region.
Peter has also applied his skill set and passion to youth education efforts. He serves on numerous boards and volunteers extensively in the community, working with educators, organizations, and private businesses. Peter currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for The Rabbit Hole, a visionary nonprofit center for the children’s book in Kansas City. He also volunteers with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and the Kansas City STEM Alliance, both of which are local organizations that promote the merits of science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum. Peter serves on the PLTW Industry Council Advisory Board where he assists with teaching and mentoring students and teachers. Additionally, Peter was a strategic contributor to the creation of the KC STEM Alliance. Peter has previously served as President of The Center of Understanding the Built Environment (CUBE), an organization that teaches architectural thinking and community values to kids of all ages.
Peter’s passion for working with children extends to both his love for soccer and his own family. Peter is a board member, soccer coach and referee for the Brookside Soccer Club (BSC) and has served for 15 years as president of the organization. The non-profit recreational youth soccer organization has more than 2500 participants and provides an affordable, accessible, and family-oriented soccer program to the Kansas City community and inner-city youth. Peter and his wife, Emily, have 6 children and are actively involved in the Kansas City homeschool community.
