Steps, Tasks, and Activities

Step 1)  Explore

Learners warm-up by listening to (not watching) the first minute of video - “Going on a Bear Hunt

Learners briefly unpack for meaning - relevant key vocabulary, concepts, and skills

Kick-off the Explore Exercise - invite learners to take mental notes when they find themselves wondering, are curious, or have questions...

Step 2)  Describe

Learners unpack exercise - the words students share will be used in Step 3 to introduce new information

Introduce theme - select from classroom, school, neighborhood, or community

Guide learners as they capture - ideas in a journal and identify a problem worth solving, draft a problem statement, transform the problem into a challenge, and discover 2-3 criteria as indicators of success guided by the critical question (as examples, see grade appropriate sample problems pages)

Prepare learners to develop presentation boards and scenario-based storyboard to visualize and consider multiple design solutions in the form of - a innovative product, communication, service, or user experience

Guide learners to prepare a survey and/or interviews of potential end users and stakeholders - anchored in convergent and divergent thinking

Learners unpack key vocabulary, concepts, and skills

Step 3)  Explain

Learners present proposals to class followed by a critique

Guide learners as they use criteria and ranking tools with the human condition in mind

Learners finalize problem statement, desired solution, criteria for success

Guide learners’ discussion on setting realistic expectations, implementation cycle, and mid-course corrections

Learners' finalize their Plan of Action

Consider bringing in guest speaker/s

Learners unpack key vocabulary, concepts, and skills

Step 4)  Demonstrate

Assign learners into submission teams

Learners implement their Plan of Action and make sense of findings

Unpack submission guidelines with learners

Unpack roles, responsibilities, and timeline to develop Google Site

Unpack learners’ self-assessment and jury process

Learners unpack key vocabulary, concepts, and skills

Step 5)  Evaluate

Guide learners as they self-assess and reflect on findings, successes, and lessons learned – together, as facilitator and learners, evaluate your collective learning experiences

What sense was made of the process? Did learners understand key vocabulary, concepts, and skills?

As facilitator if you could redesign the learning experience, what would you keep doing, start, or stop?

As learners if they could redesign the learning experience, what would they keep doing, start, or stop?

Unpack how learners might use key concepts and skills in life in general and/or in other school subjects?
